One of the biggest dreams of all aquaria lovers is certainly the possibility to have at home a glimpse of the sea that allow to observe colourful fishes and wonderful corals.

Nevertheless, for those who approach to marine aquaria is much easier to plan a tank dedicated mainly to keep fishes, so that the management gets less demanding than the one required by the beautiful reef aquaria.

For what concerns the choice of the tank is highly suggested to think about tanks of 90cm at least. In this way, even bigger Surgeonfish or Angelfish have the perfect space in order to swim.

A marine aquarium for fishes can be set up even in a close top tank, so that we can prevent unfortunate jumps of our fishes. However, the truth is that from an aesthetic point of view an open top tank has a much bigger impact on those who look at it, because it has a clean design, fascinating reflection and light games on the ceiling. Moreover, an open top tank gives the possibility to be transformed into a reef aquarium through few adjustments.

Regarding the management of this kind of aquarium, it is important to equip yourself with a good filter system.

It becomes very useful, if not essential, a filtering tank called Sump.

In the Sump you can set up every part of the mechanical filtration such as sponges, resins to reduce nitrates and phosphates (Like Nitrat Reduct and Phosphat Reduct), and a skimmer able to reduce the quantity of organic wastes before they get polluting, in addition to the heater which is necessary to maintain the temperature of our tropical aquarium stable.

This tank gives you the possibility to hide the technical equipment into the tank stand and also to place slightly oversized equipment, in order to better manage the organic loads that this kind of aquaria tends to have.

In addition to this, the rocks of the tank host bacteria that deal with the demolition of the pollutants, a little bit like the razor shell does in the freshwater aquaria. Moreover, rocks have the function of support for some soft corals. A fishes aquarium allows the addition of robust Sacrophyton corals, oscillating anemones and Sinularia corals that expand their branches towards the water surface and that are less sensitive to pollutants, requiring less lights than corals with calcareous skeletons.

In order to reduce the levels of nitrates and phosphates, we recommend carrying out partial changes of the water of the aquarium, according to the needs of the tank, other than integrating bacteria like Amtra Proclean eand taking advantage of the support of the skimmer. The salt water of the tank needs to be prepared starting from pure water derived from a reverse osmosis system, integrated with 33-35 grammes per litre of synthetic salt.

Moreover, to finish the aquarium you need to lay a layer of aragonite or calcareous sand on the bottom of the tank, but you have to wait for the end of the maturation in order to add the first fishes. A tank created for their needs will be the main attraction of the house, whether they are small school fishes, elegant Surgeonfish, shy Moray Eels or big Angelfish. Thus, an aquarium like this will keep the eyes of children and adults glued to the aquarium’s glass.
