In spring, after months of inactivity caused by winter cold, thanks to the rising of light house and temperatures, the ornamental pond starts to reawaken.

It is a magic moment in which life pulsates again; plants germinates, fishes and animals animate that little ecosystem.

Taking care of the pond in spring time is not only a matter of cleaning and maintenance, but also affection and respect for the nature that surrounds us. A healthy and well-kept pond represents a source of beauty and serenity for those who look at it and for animals that live in it.

Hygiene and cleaning of the pond

In order  to avoid the growth of algae and problems related to fish, it is important to clean the bottom of the pond in the best way possibile.

Leaves and soil transported by wind and rains have deposited during autumn and winter at the bottom of the pond, starting to rot slowly. In this way, they add organic substance to water, nutrients for algae and microorganisms.

Therefore, how to clean the bottom of the pond? If there is a lot of sediment, the best solution is to remove it by hand, lowering the water level and using Amtra Biopond Mulm 3 Complex to manage the remains.

Attention to water values

In order to preserve the balance in the pond, it is important to maintain a medium-high water hardness.

The rains and the natural development of plants and bacteria tend to lower thus hardness, causing the risk of dangerous pH bounces, corrosion to fish’s fins and stopping of the plant’s  growth. For these reasons, the advice is to test the values of KH and GH at least once a week, through Amtra Pro Test KH and Amtra Pro Test GH. During the test, if the levels seem too low it is important to replenish missing salts with Amtra Biopond Aquafit.

Filters for the ponds and the bacteria

Once cleaned the bottom and restored the correct water values, we can move on to the cleaning of the pond’s filter.

A proper functioning of the filter prevents the formation of algae and maintains the oxygenation of water: removing the mud accumulated in winter increases the available surface for bacteria that decomposed the organic substance. On the contrary, a higher water flow  increases the oxygen available for fishes.

An other useful tool to reduce algae and risk related to fish is a UV lamp, such as Amtra Scudo UVC. A UVC lamp is able to destroy pending bacteria and algae, making the water crystal-clear and increasing the efficiency of submerged plants. Remember to change the lamp at the beginning of every season, after a year its efficiency decreases greatly!

After the cleaning procedures, it is fundamental to integrate bacteria such as Amtra Clean Procult Pond and Amtra Biopond Clean. Other than preventing the growth of algae, these products can help you to avoid the accumulation of toxic substances for fishes. These substances can easily deposit after the cleaning procedures.

Noutrishment for fish

As the first rays of sun heat water, you surely have noticed an increase of fish activity: in this moment of relatively cold water,  it is betrer to feed them scarcely but frequently. Fish feeds have to be chosen according to fish dimensions and some of these feeds, such as Amtra Pro Pond Gran or Amtra Pro Pond Pellet, can be consumed even in the following minutes.

Now, you are ready to enjoy your pond in its splendor!
